Accidental Jedi

ask-smokescreen:

He’s wincing some after getting his shoulder hit, stepping around some, looking at Megatron and trying to imitate the other bot’s stance. He can manage with this kind of injury, at least.

“Pretty dead? Hey, excuse you! I’m still getting warmed up!” He thinks for a klik- this is different than how it’s shown in stories! Would the middle of the blade be the best spot to hit? He’s going to give it one stronger hit, following Megatron’s advice here to the best of his abilities, trying to recall the videos of different gladiatorial battles as a reference.

Better. His shoulder’s been compromised, but he’s fixed his feet. Still leaning too far forward in anticipation of attack, which is good for protecting the spark, but bad for returning a blow. The resulting clash of their swords does knock Megatron’s blade away, but only for a moment. It’s enough for Smokescreen to back away in retreat.

“So warm up, then! If you continue to treat this as a friendly tag-battle then you will find yourself missing a limb before long. Fight me as if your life depends on it- and I shall give you notes afterwards.” Megatron was of course planning on pulling his punches, but if Smokescreen did the same, he would never live up to his potential. Besides that, there were few injuries that his medics could not repair.

ask-smokescreen:

“Makes sense, I guess-”

He’s pausing as Megatron’s blade comes near his face- that’s definitely closer than he’d like to have a sword! But he’s not backing away, attempting to push Megatron’s sword back with his own.

“What? But- I am ready! I’ve been ready!”

A parry? That’s easy enough! He’s going to go to parry Megatron’s attack, trying to hit rapidly, figuring that one of them’ll be the exact right move, not realizing how his position makes him very easy to knock over.

“Pretty alright for a first time, right?”

An internet video came to mind, of a massive male lion roaring in feigned pain to give his pouncing cub confidence. Megatron was very much not a lion. Turning his blade to gring and push the plasma beam away, he took another step closer, using the extra space to slam into Smokescreen’s shoulder. His pauldron was singed by their blades, but he didn’t seem to notice.

“Pretty dead for a first time. Do not dance your blade around your opponents, this is not a show. Apply a single, well-placed blow, not several weak, testing ones. In a battle you will not have time to test your opponent’s resolve.”

“We haven’t even begun and you’re holding it wrong.” Megatron held out the hilt of his own energon sword, pulled from the depths of the Nemesis. “To start, you grip the hilt with both hands before turning on the blade- especially if you want to present any sort of threat to your opponent. When your sword is not integrated into your arm, you are far more easily disarmed. Two hands provides both grip and strength.”

The warlord demonstrated, holding the sword upright as it activated, before sliding into an offensive stance. “Ready yourself.”

A surprised helm tilt, “Both hands? That makes sense, but- what about those one handed blades?” Now giving some swooshes, using both hands, before taking a stance himself- likely one he saw from a past fight- he’s gonna just try to imitate what he’s seen.

“Ready when you are, Legs!”

Feet too wide. Bent too far forward. Easy to knock over once the blade was parried. “Perhaps if the blade was shorter. But one wrist is much easier to compromise than two.” With a single step forward, Megatron followed the weight of his body with his blade. The quick thrust slid against Smokescreen’s lightsaber and ended just before his face.

“No, you’re not. Parry my attack, I won’t move. What are your instincts?”

Why? We have had energy weapons for eons.

Would you place your hand in the way of a blaster bolt? It’s the same! Even if it isn’t an energy beam, you never touch the blade of your weapon without protection or reason.

See a medic, and either give that to me, or sheath it until I can teach you how to use it properly.

It was an accident, I swear- I didn’t think to myself “Man, I bet I could slice my hand with this!” My grip just slipped slightly, and there wasn’t any kinda thing blocking it. I’m not that foolish, you know.

… It’s really not that bad an injury- I don’t think I gotta see a medic for this. Uggh. Fine. While you’re around, I’ll keep it sheathed. When’re you gonna teach me?

See that you do. There is some space in my schedule tomorrow… I have been putting off our spars as fighting skill matters little in peacetime, but I cannot allow you to wield a weapon that you are not skilled in and injure yourself or others further.

Aesthetics have nothing to do with a weapon’s ability to do its damage. If anything, flair can be a distraction and hindrance.

Sure they do! You can work well with any weapon if you train yourself, so why wouldn’t you pick one that looks great? And it looks so cool and-

… Also, it can do plenty of damage. I just- uh- I accidentally touched the blade with my digit, and now my digit’s got a slice in it. Not fun!
